The Department currently offers an undergraduate program (B. Tech) in Mechanical Engineering. The present intake is 60. We provide state of the art facilities both in the classrooms as well as in the laboratories. The department has a team of well qualified, experienced and committed staff members. It provides an atmosphere conducive for acquiring knowledge and emphasizes on practical learning. The department motivates both cultural and physical activities.

Message from Head of the Department
The Department of Mechanical Engineering started with the inception of MITS in 2013. We offer B.Tech Degree of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University for a yearly intake of 60 students. The Department has well-equipped laboratories, spacious classrooms, and a workshop area. The types of equipment operated in the laboratories are of industrial standard and are being used to train our students to a high degree of professional excellence. We believe that the natural wonder in every student combined with the excellent state-of-the-art infrastructure and a dedicated and well experienced team of faculty members, with 8 Ph.D. level professors, will mould our students for a better engineering career amongst their peers, as envisioned in our vision and mission. We are well advised by highly placed Academicians and Industry leaders. Our students have displayed their engineering and leadership skills by winning in several national-level competitions and generating equal opportunities for themselves nationally as any student of a seasoned National level institute like IITs and NITs. We have very active student chapters of ASME and SAE through which our students compete and get national exposure in current issues. The research and consultancy activity in the department has seen a flurry of activity with signing MOUs and bagging funded projects, worth 1.29Cr, from DST, DRDO, ANRF etc, under our belt. The faculty have many publications in SCI indexed journals and are also international reviewers for SCI indexed journals. We are well aware of our vision and are steadily moving towards it with renewed zeal and purpose. Come and join hands with us to a better tomorrow filled with opportunities.
The Mechanical Engineering Research Team, comprising Faculty and students, works on cutting-edge projects, publishes research papers and collaborates with industries to address real world challenges. Their work contributes to the development of new technologies and solutions, enhancing the fields of mechanical engineering.
The professional bodies and student chapters provide students and faculty members with opportunities to enhance their technical knowledge, develop professional skills, and foster innovation through workshops, events, and networking. By participating in these esteemed associations, students can stay updated with industry trends and cultivate a strong foundation for their future careers.
MITS, where I pursued my Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, has been instrumental in nurturing my passion for research and innovation. The engaging curriculum and hands-on projects allowed me to explore complex engineering concepts while developing critical problem-solving skills. Additionally, the supportive environment fostered my leadership abilities and organizational skills through various team-based activities and extracurricular initiatives. Overall, my MITS experience has equipped me with a strong foundation for a successful career in engineering and beyond.
My time at MITS during my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering was truly a memorable journey. The teachers were incredibly supportive, always ready to guide us not just in academics but also in various activities and competitions that helped us grow both personally and professionally. Their encouragement pushed us to step out of our comfort zone, whether it was participating in technical societies or representing the college in intercollegiate events. The campus placements were also a highlight, opening up exciting career opportunities for us. Looking back, I feel grateful for the experiences and relationships that made these years so special.
My time at MITS was truly transformative, allowing me to explore my passions and develop lasting skills. The college wholeheartedly supported my enduring passion for quizzing, which led me to establish the MITS Quiz Club and foster a vibrant quizzing culture on campus. The encouragement and support from the faculty and the college community played a pivotal role in shaping my academic and professional journey. I am deeply grateful to MITS for its unwavering support and for being a key part of my path to IIM Ahmedabad and the corporate world.
MITS laid a strong foundation for my engineering career. I was fortunate to have dedicated, friendly, and supportive professors. As part of the first batch of MITS, we were essentially pioneering everything we did, starting from scratch—it was an exciting and unique experience.
The MITS E-BAJA team showcased a strong technical performance in the national BAJA SAE Electric competition, competing against 90 engineering teams from across the country.
In the endurance event, the team secured an overall position of 24, demonstrating the vehicle’s reliability, battery efficiency, and consistent off-road performance under demanding track conditions.
The 30-member team was led by Captain Gabrin Paul (2022–26 batch). The project was guided by Faculty Advisor Dr. Nikhil Thoppil, whose technical supervision and support were crucial throughout the design, fabrication, and testing phases.
The electric ATV was entirely student-designed and built, involving battery integration, motor control tuning, chassis fabrication, safety validation, and performance testing.
This effort reflects the team’s practical engineering skills, coordination, and commitment to sustainable mobility innovation.

The MITS BAJA (All-Terrain Vehicle) team delivered an exceptional performance at the prestigious BAJA SAE 2026 competition held at the National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX), Indore, from 7th to 11th January 2026.
Competing against some of the finest engineering institutions in the country, the team secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 11 Overall, placing them among the nation’s best teams. Demonstrating remarkable technical precision and performance excellence, MITS BAJA achieved:
AIR 2 in Efficiency – showcasing superior vehicle optimization and fuel management.
AIR 4 in Endurance – reflecting the vehicle’s durability, reliability, and consistent performance under rigorous testing conditions.
Finishing 11th overall in a highly competitive field stands as a testament to the team’s relentless effort, innovation, and dedication.
The 30-member team was led by Captain Mr. Boyal Gijo (2022–26, Mechanical Engineering), whose leadership and commitment were instrumental in driving the team’s success. The team was mentored by Mr. Charly Chacko and guided by Mr. Anand Rajagopal (Faculty Advisor), whose technical expertise and continuous support played a vital role throughout the competition journey.
This achievement reflects the spirit of teamwork, perseverance, and engineering excellence that defines MITS BAJA.
Team Cyclomech comprising 5 students of S6 ME and 2 students of S4 ME secured first prize and won a cash award of Rs. 10,000 for the best presentation as part of the Bicycle design competition conducted by SAEIndia Southern Section on 1st April 2023 at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul, TN.

The Mechanical Engineering Department Library Caters to the information needs of the faculty, students, and staff of the department. It aims to support the teaching learning activity in the college and also provide the students updated knowledge and to ensure the optimum utilization of the available resources.
The collection comprises of printed documents such as books, reports, theses, standards and journal back volumes. It has a collection of almost all books prescribed in the syllabus. Project reports and seminar papers are also available in the library. The library working hours are from 10 A.M. to 5.00 P.M. on weekdays. It remains closed as per the institute’s list of holidays.
Mechanical engineering smart classrooms are tech-enabled learning environments that integrate interactive displays, projectors, audio systems, and student devices to deliver high-quality, engaging, and interactive education through dynamic presentations, multimedia content, and collaborative tools. These advanced setups enhance student understanding of complex concepts, foster collaborative learning, and provide practical experience by supplementing theoretical knowledge with real-world examples and virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR).
