The disciplines of Basic Sciences and Humanities serve as the essential groundwork for all courses in engineering and technology. The Department of Basic Science and Humanities was established in July 2013. Since then, it has been instrumental in building a student's knowledge base in the field of science and humanities. It helps them to develop a new outlook towards technology in tune with the social, economic and political advancements in the present-day society.
The Department of Basic Science and Humanities is headed by Dr. Tesymol Cyriac and it comprises qualified faculty members from the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities, English, Psychology and Physical Education. The research activities are promoted and supported by Dr. Vinod Kumar P B, Research Professor. The Department currently has twenty-four faculty members and one technical staff. This includes 8 Ph.D. holders including two KTU- Ph.D. guides and 16 Postgraduates with 3 of them pursuing their Doctoral degrees.
Highlight Features:
The Department of Basic Science & Humanities, consisting of 25 experienced and competent members, is an integral part of the institution. The faculty members attend FDPs regularly to keep updated themselves with new developments in the field of science and technology and have a good number of paper publications in reputed journals to their credit. The department offers courses in Mathematical foundations of Cyber security and AI & DS for various MTech programmes. In the undergraduate level engineering programme, the department offers courses in Mathematics up to the fourth semester; Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Life Skills & Professional Communication in the first & second semesters; Business Economics and Principles of Management in the fifth and sixth semesters. The Physics and Chemistry lab are well equipped to provide an experimental foundation for the theoretical concepts that they learn in the classroom. The Language Lab maintained by the department helps students to sharpen their linguistic skills. It is important that students have an opportunity to practise LSRW activities to improve their language skills. The courses like Life skills and Professional communication foster the soft skills and self-development of the students. “Linguaskill”, the latest language assessment system from Cambridge, is offered to all first year students to prepare them for the exam. Opportunity is open to all interested students to do projects based on courses in Maths and Chemistry. I can say that the department aims at the holistic development of students and provides opportunities and support for the same.
Research is essential for fostering academic excellence, advancing knowledge, and enhancing the quality of education. Through active research, faculty stay updated with the latest developments in their fields, which in turn enriches their teaching and inspires students to think critically and creatively. The faculty members of Department of Basic Science and Humanities have a good number of paper publications in reputed journals to their credit. Three of the faculty members are pursuing their doctoral degrees and Two of the faculty members are research guides.
Smart classroom provides a simple yet effective way of enhancing the teaching and learning experience. With the help of the projector connected to a computer, our teachers present lessons through slides, videos, images, and animations, which makes the concepts more interesting and easier for us to understand. This setup saves time, helps in explaining difficult topics more clearly, and keeps us engaged in the class.
Physics is a practical science and relies on data, so physicists need to understand how data is generated and how to analyse it. This covers a wide range of skills including the ability to use apparatus and instruments in the laboratory. MITS has a well-equipped physics laboratory with semiconductor LASER for Diffraction experiments, Newton’s ring arrangement, CRO, Solar cell, Thermocouple, Half shade Polarimeter etc.stions which can be tested with the available materials and equipment.
The chemistry department provides the opportunity for the students to obtain a thorough knowledge of different fields of chemistry. There are lecture courses in areas of spectroscopy, electrochemistry, water technology, instrumental analysis, polymer synthesis and fuel and lubricants.
Language Laboratory facilitates learning of English language through innovative products such as digital multimedia control, wireless headsets and microphones, the interactive response pad, etc. The multimedia devices used in the language lab will arouse the eyes and ears of the learner to acquire the language quickly and easily. The student will have a wholesome experience of LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) to gain proficiency in the foreign language.
