National Science Day Celebrations SCIENCIA 2024

As a part of National Science Day celebration (Feb 28) to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by Nobel laureate Sir CV Raman, Department of Basic Science & Humanities of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science organised *SCIENCIA 24* on 27th & 28th February 2028 .The theme of national science day 2024 was “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat,” which reflects the nation’s increasing international visibility and significance.

The event was inaugurated by Dr.Chiku Abraham, Vice-Principal of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science . Professor V P N Nampoori, Visiting Professor, ISP,Cochin University of Science and Technology delivered the expert talk on “Raman Effect- Its Interdisciplinary Applications”.Around hundred students and staff members participated in the session. On 28 th february in the presence of Dr.Neelakandan P C, Principal MITS  a science quiz was conducted exclusively for S2 students.Quiz program was coordinated by S5 student Adish.

Preloved Alley

Preloved Alley, a thrift store established at MITS, initiated by Ms Anju M Shaji, Assistant Professor, Department of Basic Science & Humanities and a team of students, organized a highly successful three-day thrift sale during the campus arts and tech fest from 30th March to 1st April. The initiative began with a collection drive where students generously donated a diverse range of items, including clothing, ornaments, books, and more. This effort aimed to cultivate a thriving thrifting culture among MITS students, fostering sustainable practices and encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly habits.

By offering second-hand items at affordable prices, the thrift store not only reduces waste but also promotes conscious consumption within the campus community. Another remarkable initiative called Meraki was also added to this space to uplift the creativity of students. As part of Meraki, students were encouraged to bring items they had created, showcasing their unique talents and skills

 

Report on MITS MUN

On 9th and 10th December the MITS MUN club held their first ever conference after COVID-19 with 28 delegates and three executive board members. The opening ceremony on 9th December was attended by our principal Dr Neelakantan PC, our vice principal Dr. Chikku Abraham and HOD of Basic Science and Humanities  Dr.Mary Lissy .The welcome address was given by Nandhana Rajeev from  S3 CSA. It was followed by addresses from our principal and vice principal

By 11am the official conference began, the executive board with an introductory session on MUN to give the first time delegates an idea of the structure of the conference. For the executive board we invited Mr. Karthik Uday , Ms Aysha Hussain and Ms Falthima Althaf they are proficient in MUN conferences and have prior knowledge of the proceedings .

UBUNTU TRAINING PROGRAMME, 2023

The Department of Basic Science & Humanities organised ‘UBUNTU’, a professional etiquette and leadership training programme for a selected group of 75 first-year students on 18 January 2023 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Visvesvaraya Hall. The resource person for the training was Dr Pramod Dinakar, Assistant Professor and Research Supervisor, Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University, Ernakulam. The programme was coordinated by Ms Anju M Shaji, Assistant Professor, English.

Dr Pramod incorporated a participatory and experiential approach to involve and groom the students as professionals and leaders. The students were enthusiastic and shared their interest for phase-2.

ODYSSEY

Odyssey’ is a self-discovery program facilitated by the Basic Science and Humanities Department on 17th-25th August 2017. The seven day program help the participants to overcome their inhibitions and discover oneself in the process. It aims at developing basic life skills necessary for facing challenges in life. The main focus of ‘Odyssey’ is confidence building and fear factor analysis through experiential learning. The program is open for S3, S5 & S7 students.

On 01 Nov 2017,BS& H Department organized the third edition of this annual quiz completion in commemoration of late President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam on the occasion of his birth anniversary on the topic. Advancements in Science and Technology. Quiz master Mr. Kiran Govind, Junior scientist from National Physical Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), DRDO, Kakkanad conducted the quiz. Twelve teams participated and five teams qualified for the final round. The first & second position was bagged by MITS students

SCHOLASTIC HI-Q INTER COLLEGIATE QUIZ 2015

Basic Science and Humanities Department organized an Inter-Collegiate Quiz Competition, Scholastic Hi-Q, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of late, beloved President of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. The competition was held on 17.10.2015, Saturday. From all over Kerala 26 teams participated in the competition. Mr. Kiran Govind, scientist form NPOL was the Quiz master. The team of Aravind G.S. and Sachin S. B from Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram won the first prize, they bagged a cash prize of Rs.10000, trophy and certificates. The team of Abdul Vassim Suraj and Fazal Basheer from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering were the runners-up. They bagged a cash prize of Rs. 5000, trophy and certificates.

  • Basic Science and humanities Department organized a talk by Prof. Rein Nobel, an eminent mathematician from Vrije University, Amsterdam on the topic The Downs-Thompson Paradox for a parallel queuing system on 15th December 2015 in the seminar hall.
