Technical Talk on Foundation Design - Past and Future

The Department of Civil Engineering at Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) organized an insightful technical talk on “Foundation Design – Past and Future” for the fifth-semester civil engineering students on 24 September 2025. The session aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the evolution and future trajectory of geotechnical foundation practices.

We were privileged to host Er. Jayakrishnana Menon, Director of TDAC Solutions Pvt. Ltd., as the keynote speaker. With decades of expertise in geotechnical and structural engineering, he delivered a compelling presentation that traced the historical development of foundation design methodologies, highlighted key milestones in engineering practice and materials shaping the future of the field. Students gained valuable insights into real-world challenges and innovations, fostering a deeper appreciation for the role of foundations in safe and resilient infrastructure.

The final-year students of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering at Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) had the privilege of attending an insightful session on “Scope of Engineering Graduates in the Techno-Management Sector” on 24 September 2025 at APJ Hall.

The event was graced by two distinguished speakers—Prof. Vishnu Namboodiri, Program Head at NICMAR University, and Prof. (Dr.) R. Sathish Kumar, Dean Academics. Their interactive talks highlighted the emerging opportunities for engineering graduates at the intersection of technology and management.

The session effectively bridged the gap between technical expertise and managerial acumen, motivating students to explore diverse career pathways in the rapidly evolving construction and infrastructure sectors. Students gained valuable insights into how techno-managerial skills can enhance their professional versatility and leadership potential in the modern engineering landscape.

 

Technical Talk: “Beyond the Bench – Shaping Engineers for the Real World”

Resource Person: Er. Suresh Pottekkatt, Managing Director, FINS Engineers and Contractors Ltd., and Former State Chairman, Builders Association of India

The Department of Civil Engineering, MITS, in collaboration with ASCE MITS, organized an inspiring technical talk titled “Beyond the Bench: Shaping Engineers for the Real World” on 10 September 2025.

We were privileged to host Er. Suresh Pottekkatt, an eminent professional with decades of experience in the construction and infrastructure sector. Drawing from his extensive career, Er. Pottekkatt shared invaluable perspectives on bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry practice. He encouraged students to think beyond textbooks, emphasizing adaptability, innovation, and professional ethics as essential traits of modern engineers.

The event proved to be an enriching experience, motivating future civil engineers to pursue excellence with a sense of purpose and social responsibility.

 

 

“Environmental Issues of Coal Mining & Environmental Clearance Framework”

A technical talk on “Environmental Issues of Coal Mining & Environmental Clearance Framework” was organized to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable practices in the mining sector. The session was delivered by Mr. Krishnadas A. M., Deputy Manager (Environment) at the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI), Bhubaneswar.

During the session, Mr. Krishnadas elaborated on the environmental challenges associated with coal mining, including land degradation, water pollution, and air quality deterioration. He also explained the environmental clearance (EC) framework, EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) procedures, and strategies for achieving sustainable mining and reclamation.

The talk provided valuable insights into how India can balance its growing energy demands with environmental conservation, encouraging students to adopt eco-conscious approaches in engineering and project planning.

The session concluded with an engaging interaction, where students discussed real-world issues and solutions related to environmental management in mining.
