DEPARTMENT OF Mechanical Engineering

The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) set up in 1957 is the only national centre in the country where research in all disciplines relating to fishing and fish processing is undertaken. The institute started functioning at Cochin in 1957.

Inspired by their common objectives, MITS have entered into Collaborative Research MoA with CIFT to further promote and accelerate research in the area of fisheries science and related technologies.

The collaborative project is titled “Development and validation of Engineered medical devices using biomaterials from marine resources”

2 nd international Conference on Advances in Manufacturing and Material Science (ICAMSS
2022) was conducted in online mode on 7-9 July 2022

• The conference was conducted in partnership with Gdansk University of Technology, Poland
• The theme of the conference was Sustainable Materials and Manufacturing Techniques
• The goal of ICAMMS 2022 was to display the latest developments in interdisciplinary
  research in the domain of material science and manufacturing.
• The conference focused on the fundamental areas of application with particular emphasis
  on emerging trends and industrial use of emerging materials and modern manufacturing
  techniques.

Vaayu Shakti – Wind Turbine Designing and Modelling Competition

• The Sixth Semester Mechanical Engineering Students Remith N, Deepak J Nadackal, Baselal K, Akshay Krishna S and Aadarsh Deva Suresh (2015-19 ME Batch) bagged 2nd Prize for Vaayu Shakti – Wind Turbine Designing and Modelling Competition, a research event in IIT Madras SHAASTRA, held on 5th January 2018.

• International conference on Advanced Manufacturing and Material Science (ICAMMS) was a two day technical event organized by the Mechanical Engineering Department.

• The conference theme was so designed to cover the recent developments in manufacturing and material science.

• We received around 170 research articles of authors from USA, France, South Africa, South Korea and from premier institutions in India like IISc, IITs, NITs and other leading institutions.

• The selected 50 articles will be published in Springer Nature.

• The inaugural address was given by Mr.Prasad K Panicker, the executive director in charge of cochin refinery of bharat petroleum corporation limited (BPCL).

• Professor Kim L Pickering professor of materials science and engineering,University of Waikato was the conference chair and keynote speaker of the event.

• SAE Student Convention 2018, Tier 2 competitions were held at Saintgits College of Engineering, Kottayam on 20th January 2018. 400 students from engineering colleges all over Kerala participated and a total of 180 teams were registered for the competition. 45 Students from of MITS Mechanical Engineering Department bagged prizes in different events. Winners are eligible for Tier 3 competition which includes colleges from whole south India.

Eight Semester B.Tech Degree Examination May 2017 – 100% Result

• All students of Mechanical Engineering Department passed for all subjects in the Eight Semester B.Tech Degree Examination held in May 2017.

Mr. Pradeepmon T.G., Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, MITS was a resource person for FDP on Fuzzy Logic & Genetic Algorithm which was conducted on 27th & 28th July  at AdiShankara Institute Of Engineering & Technology, Kalady.

The mechanical engineering workshop is a common lab for all branches in the first year. This lab is also used widely during the inter-disciplinary projects undertaken by students and faculty members.

The machine tool lab is equipped with state of the art machine tools such as CNC turning, VMC, and conventional machines including a high performance production lathe supporting the industrial interactions and research activities in the areas of machining and machine tool systems.

The Hydraulic Machines Laboratory provides the students a chance to work with turbines, pumps and various flow measuring devices. The lab is equipped with the commonly used turbines in power generation like Pelton Wheel, Kaplan Turbine, Francis Turbine. The laboratory is also having various pumps that are used in our day to day life.

MITS has established advanced facilities to promote emerging technologies and train students in the field of computer aided design. This laboratory has the capability to manage and execute research projects.

The purpose of this lab is to develop an understanding of the basics of internal combustion engines and their performance. The study of the performance of these engines helps to address issues related to power generation, emissions and environmental impact, fuel economy and fuel composition effects on engine operation and mechanical limitations of obtaining ideal performance.
