Expert Talk on “Recent Developments in RF”

On 27th April 2023 the association of ECE department (ILLUMINATI) organised an expert talk session for s6 and s4 students of ECE dept. The session was handled by Mr. Bibith Paul, RF systems design engineer at Apple, California.

The session was also attended by the principal, vice principal, and faculty members of the ECE department.

The session was quite instructive, beginning with an introduction and scope of RF (Radio Frequency) in the modern day. Later, he recounted his professional path and all of the preparation that led him to the dream firm Apple.

There was also a Q&A session where students may ask questions and have them answered. The principal, Dr. Neelakantan P C, presented Mr. Bibith Paul with a token of appreciation. The session ended with a group shot.

 

Outreach for School Students

JUMPSTART 3.0, the Outreach programme for School Students was conducted on 19th and 20th of January 2023 as an initiative aimed at creating an excellent experience for young minds in the area of technology. 50 students from 6 schools attended the program.

The outreach program was coordinated by Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Asst. professor ECE MITS.

Sessions were handled by Assistant Professors Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Mr. Rishikesh P H, Ms. Deepa Prabhu and technical staff Mr. Gincemon, Ms. Sajana Salam, Mr. Nixon Joy and Ms. Lissy K O.

Robotics and the Internet of Things are going to drive the world tomorrow. These are the technologies that lay the foundation for our journey ahead and would together enable us to build intelligent systems capable of making independent decisions. The Internet of Things enables all devices to communicate with each other as well as humans thereby creating a smarter world. This course assimilates concepts from these technologies for building real-time applications. This is a practical-oriented course where the participants can get a certification and takeaway kits for further learning. The course guarantees a series of projects for participants which involves sensors and IoT and team-based development of a solution to meet specified criteria.

Day 1 :- Introduction to electronic boards, sensors, and interface along with a hands-on (practical) project on the development of a sensor-based embedded system.

Day 2 :- Introduction to robotics and cyber-physical system along with a hands-on (practical) session on building a robot car and hands-on (practical) in IoT

Technical Talk on “Circuits & Systems for AI”

On 20th April 2023 department of electronics and communication organised a tech-talk for S6 and S4 students. HOD and other faculties also marked their presence for the same.

The session was handled by Dr. Kala S, Assistant professor and head of ECE dept at IIIT Kottayam. The theme of the tech -talk was circuits and systems for AI. The seminar was quite instructive, and the notion of deep learning was also thoroughly discussed.

The students were informed about the several present undiscovered potential in the realm of circuits and systems. The present projects as well as the numerous projects accomplished by IIIT Kottayam students were also listed. The speaker also discussed the different internship and training programmes that IIIT provides to students from other universities. The programme concluded with a Q&A session in which students may ask questions and have them answered.

SILSILA

On 30th November, S3 (2021-2025 batch) ECE students had organised a talent show named SILSILA, which every student participated in and astoundingly performed.

Dr. Arunkant A. Jose and Dr. Krishna Priya, the faculty advisors for S3, as well as Dr. Abhilash Antony, and Anjali SV, were also invited to the programme.

Numerous events took place, including group dances by the boys and girls and duet songs. There were also a lot of entertaining occasions under the name well done vasu, where the participants had to brag. Everyone who was present there enjoyed the event.

A football-based quiz on the FIFA World Cup was also organized. In no time, the students had been divided into groups, and the rapid-fire questioning had begun. The participants’ performance, speed, and accuracy were extraordinarily impressive.

Workshop on IoT

The department of ECE association in collaboration with IIC conducted training on IoT for S3 ECE students today from 1.00 PM to 4.00 PM at MPMC Lab.
The session involved basic app building using Blynk and control of actuators over Wi-Fi and Internet.

Students learned how to make IoT Based Home Automation Project using Blynk & NodeMCU ESP8266. Session included Mobile app based control of lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and appliances without a manual switch. Session included home security such as access control and alarm systems. When connected with the Internet, home devices are an important constituent of the Internet of Things (“IoT”).

 

Break The Ice

On 12th October 2022 and 2nd NOVEMBER , 2022, the ECE Dept Association Illuminati held an icebreaker session for s3 students (batch of 2021-2025) with S5 ECEstudents (batch of 2020-2024).

The address was given by ECE dept instructor Rishikesh sir, who enthusiastically welcomed all the s3 students and introduced them to the s5 batch. Faculty advisors of each batch were also present for the same.

The S5 batch organized several games that captivated everyone there and the S3 batch enjoyed the programme. And it was through this programme, a strong friendship between the seniors and juniors was formed.

 

"NOT THAT ECE"

S7 students(batch of 2019-2023) of ECE dept conducted an Ice-Breaking Session on 28th sept 2022. The event was conducted for students of Semester III(batch of 2021- 2025).

This program was organized to address effective communication with the engineering community and society at large, such as making effective presentations, giving and receiving clear instruction. S7 students arranged a variety of entertaining and engaging games for S3 pupils, which the students thoroughly liked.

S4S - “Interfacing sensor and actuator in Robotic Car”

S4S – Student 4 Student Session on “Sensor Interfacing in Robotic Car”, for S4 ECE was organized on 05th May 2022, at Microprocessor and Microcontroller Lab , Ramanujan Block , MITS from 10 AM to 12.30 PM. The session was organized for S4 ECE students (2020-24 Batch).
The following students handled the session. Elvis and Gabriel – S8 ECE (2018-22 Batch).
Alen Sabu, Vishnu R Menon, Liyana Anil, Arya M A, Sreevidya and Rufus Shaji – S6 ECE (2019-23 Batch).

Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Asst Professor, ECE, had organized and coordinated the event.
Mr. Rishikesh P H, Asst Professor, ECE, gave an insight about rovers. Dr. Dhanya S, Assoc. ECE was the main pillar of support and gave an insight about hands-on workshop in robotics.

Talk on Entrepreneurship

Illuminati – The ECE Department Association, organized a talk on “Entrepreneurship and Startup”, by Ms. Elsa George, on 09 Feb 2021 from 7 to 8 PM for ECE students.
Elsa has started her own start-up company and has recently launched her first product.

Experience Sharing on Placement Strategies

The Department of ECE Association, “Illuminati” organized a talk on “EXPERIENCE SHARING ON PLACEMENT STRATEGIES” by the students Ms. Arbeena Azeeb and Ms. Harsha Sudheer of S7 ECE (2017-21) who are placed at multiple companies.

The interaction was conducted on 16th Jan 2021 from 5 pm to 6 pm for S5 ECE and S7 ECE students.

Invited panel discussion session by ECE passed out batch students placed at TCS

The Department of ECE Association, “Illuminati” organized an invited panel discussion session by our ECE passed out batch students who are placed at TCS.

The interaction was conducted on 17th Oct 2020 from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm for S5 and S7 ECE students.

An Industry Expert Invited Talk for ECE  MITS students was organized on 28th August 2020, from 3.30 PM to 6 PM.

The ECE Dept Association Illuminati conducted a discussion on the  Trends Scope and Future of Electronics at S6 and S4 class. The session was for S4 and S6 ECE students.

S4S-Art of Project Management

 

The  ECE Dept Association Illuminati conducted S4S on Tuesday 18 Feb 2020 at Steve Jobs Hall from 1.30 PM to 2.30 PM. We had an S4S – Student 4 Student session on “Art of Project Management”. This session was for S4 ECE , S6 ECE students and S8 ECE students.  Arvin, Mikhil, Adeep, Amarnath and Nithin of S6 ECE handled the S4S session. They briefed about their experience on Arm Design challenge and various other competitions in which they had managed projects. Dr. Rijo, Ms. Nayana and Dr. Arunkant coordinated the session.

S4S - SHARE YOUR STORY -Team Yuva Mastermind

 

The ECE Dept Association Illuminati conducted a story session for the students of S4 and S6 ECE on 4th February 2020. The event was organized at Steve jobs Hall from 1.30 PM to 2.30 PM. Yuva mastermind team from S6 ECE -Joseph, Albin, Vaishnavi and Anjana shared their story about the two-time successive selection (2018 & 2019) to Yuva mastermind finals with a funding of 20000 Rs and cash prize of 75000 Rs.

THEME BASED POSTER DESIGN COMPETITION

 

The ECE Dept Association Illuminati conducted a theme-based poster design contest on 21st January 2020 at MPMC lab and VLSI lab from 1.30 to 2.30 PM. It was planned for S4 and S6 students. The event is coordinated by Illuminati association student members of S4 and S6 ECE. The students were split into groups of 4 each and developed posters.

The ECE Dept Association conducted an experience sharing S4S (student for student session) on 26th Sept. 2019 for S3 (2017-21 batch) organized by the participants from S3,ECE for various events of Tatva’19 held at NIT, Calicut.

Workshop on Cadence

 

A workshop on analog and digital system design using Cadence was held on 11-12th Oct. 2019 in the VLSI lab for the S5 & S7 ECE students. The event was co-ordinated by Dr. ShobaGopalakrishnan, Asso. Professor, Ms. Krishnapriya S &Ms.BinuManohar, Asst. Professor, ECE.

The Department of ECE conducted an ice breaking session ‘Metanoia-2K19’ for S3, ECE students on 30th August 2019. The session was handled by students of the S7 batch.

Invited Talk

 

Dr. Bijoy Antony Jose, Asst. Professor, Department of Electronics, CUSAT gave a talk on the ‘Security issues of IOT’ on 29thAugust 2019. The talk was attended by S5 & S7 students and was organized by the department association.

DEPARTMENT ASSOCIATION- ILLUMINATI

The Electronics and Communication Engineering Association of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science(MITS) named ‘ILLUMINATI’ was inaugurated by Shri.V.Raghunandan IES, Deputy Director General BSNL, (Department of Telecommunication), Kochi on 10th July, 2014.

The name of the association ‘ILLUMINATI’ and logo was released on the occasion. During his inaugural address Shri.V.Raghunandan elaborated on the fundamental concepts in communication and gave the students a general awareness about the environmental aspects of radiation from mobile towers.

ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES -ROBO RACE

As a part of the Department of Electronics and Communication Association- ILLUMINATI- and IEEE student chapter, a Robo Race competition was organized on 12th April 2018. The event was coordinated by Dr. Arunkant A Jose (Assistant Professor, ECE) and Mr. Anas M. M (Assistant Professor, ECE).The race was open to students of all branches to create a practical exposure to robots and their applications. The Race introduced the students to concepts of robot movement, perceiving environment and avoiding obstacles.

QUIZ ON EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION

Participants: S2 and S4 students

As part of the activities of ECE Association ‘Illuminati, the S4 students (2016-2020 Batch) of ECE department organized a quiz on 7th march 2018 for 2nd semester (2017-2021 Batch) and 4th semester (2016-2020 Batch) students on the topic ‘EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION’. The Quiz was planned by Ms. Dhanya S, (Associate Professor, ECE). The questions covered the basics of communication and its evolution. 10 teams each with 2 members participated in the competition. There were two rounds and in the first round, there were 10 questions with 10 points for the correct answer and 5 points for the pass questions. Out of 10 teams, 5 teams passed the first round and got eligible for the second round. Round two followed the same rules as round one(for mark distribution).In round two, the students were asked to identify the personalities who had given their contributions in the field of communication. Students maintained a healthy competition, and this quiz gave them an opportunity to know more about the field of communication and to increase their interest in that area.

TECHNICAL SYMPOSIUM

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Association- ILLUMINATI– organized a two day Technical Symposium on 27th and 28th October 2017. These days saw experience sharing and a confluence of ideas and interaction among personnel from Academia, Research Organizations and Industry. Resource persons were from NeST Technologies, VTransform Consulting Services, IBS, Cherthala IHRD College and a reputed Research Organization of Central Government. Drawn from the presenter’s personal experience, the scope of the talk and subsequent interaction included career opportunities; knowledge, skill set and attitude essential for the respective domains; and recent trends in Engineering. Interesting reminiscence of gaps experienced at the start of career and at career shifts were also shared to enlighten the students on how they can better equip themselves for their future ventures. The Symposium was coordinated by Ms. Priscilla Grace George (Assistant Professor, ECE) and Ms. Athira Jess Cherian (Assistant Professor, ECE).

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) conducted an in-house accelerated Personality and Communication Skill Development program, ICE-BREAKING 2017, for S5 ECE students on 11th and 12th August 2017. The program was hosted by Mr. Rishikesh P. H (Assistant Professor, ECE), Ms. Irin Sajan (Assistant Professor, ECE), Ms. Priscilla Grace George (Assistant Professor, ECE) and Ms. Athira Jess Cherian (Assistant Professor, ECE). The sessions were scheduled from 6 AM to 11 PM on both days and included motivational talks and a variety of activities to boost the personality and communication skills of students.

INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE SHARING SESSION

As a part of the MITS ECE department activity, an interactive experience sharing session was conducted by Mr Akhilesh, a young entrepreneur on 30th of September 2016, so as to brief the students on the pros & cones of start-ups. The students from the seventh semester of ECE attended the session.

Mr. Akhilesh shared his experience on having a start up of his own and the risks & ambiguities he had faced during the years after setting up his own company. He also shared his experience of working currently in the hiring department of leading companies like Amazon, AskMe etc. The session was very much inspiring for students. He also mentioned some programming languages like GO which would be useful for the students in the future.

As a part of the MITS ECE Department Association Activity- Distinguished Lecture Series, a lecture was given on ‘Internet of Things’ by Mr. K. Moorthi, Co-founder/Product Manager of Coimbatore based company ‘Enthu Technology Solutions India Pvt Ltd’. The students from the fifth semester of ECE attended the lecture. The distinguished lecture series event was organized and co-ordinated by the faculties – Ms. Remya Jacob (Asst. Professor, ECE) and Ms. Priscilla Grace George (Asst. Professor, ECE).

IoT is a seamless connected network system of embedded objects/devices, with identifiers, in which communication without any human intervention is made possible by utilizing standard and inter-operable communication protocols. In order to clarify the working of IoT, Mr. Moorthi showed a working model of an IoT controlled lighting system which could be turned ON and OFF from anywhere in the world from a PC or a mobile device. The talk also included discussions on various projects done using Raspberry Pi. He also presented the mini-computer made using Raspberry Pi, with which he did his presentation. The talk included applications and possibilities of IoT in the present world and share of Start-Up companies in the growth of both economy and technology in India. An open invitation was given by Enthu Technology to do internship and to share innovative ideas with them so that it can be realized as a product. The students found the session really inspiring and informative.

WORKSHOP ON "VEGA" PROCESSORS BY CDAC

A one-day technical workshop was conducted in the department by CDAC on 2nd June, 2022. The workshop included a detailed hands-on training on “VEGA” processors (India’s first indigenous 64-bit multi-core out-of-order superscalar Processor). The workshop was attended by the sixth semester students of the department.

WORKSHOP ON TECHNICAL MANUSCRIPT WITH LATEX

As a part of the MITS ECE Department Association – ILLUMINATI, a one day workshop was conducted on Technical manuscript with LaTeX’ by Mr. Sreeraj K.P, Lecturer, GPC, Kottakal on 23rd September 2016. The students from the seventh semester of ECE attended the workshop. The workshop was organized and co-ordinated by the faculties –Ms. Remya Jacob (Asst. Professor, ECE) and Ms. Priscilla Grace George (Asst. Professor, ECE) and student co-ordinators – Aravind Menon (S3, ECE), Priyasree S (S3, ECE) and Sai Vaishnavi (S3, ECE).

The software was already installed in the systems, so the students got a chance to work with LaTeX on their own. LaTeX is a set of macros for TeX that aims at reducing the user’s task to the sole role of writing the content. The students came to know about the different formatting processes that could be done using LaTeX in their documents. Each student created documents of their own in their corresponding systems. The classes were both interactive and interesting. The students also learned how LaTeX makes it very simple to handle equations, figures, bibliographies, indexes, etc, thereby easing the tedious task of project and seminar documentation. On whole, the workshop conducted had introduced a new typesetting system among students that would really benefit in their individual works.

TECHNICAL TALKS

RESOURCE PERSON : Mr. Kuruvila George, Diretcor, Verdant Telemetry & Antenna Systems

Verdant Telemetry is currently one of the leading manufacturers of special purpose antennas used in aircraft communication. Mr. Kuruvila George briefed about the activities happening in Verdant and also presented the various opportunities in the field of RF Communication where the students can focus to work on. The session was conducted by the ECE Department on 18th March 2021 and was attended by the faculty and students of the department.

RESOURCE PERSON : Mr. Jijin Gopal, Apple – Production Lead – AI/ML

An External Expert Invited Talk was conducted on 28th August 2020. The session was handled by Mr. Jijin Gopal who is currently working with Apple as the Production Lead in the AI/ML domain. The main focus of the session was to help the students prepare themselves for working in an industry environment. The topics discussed during the talk included
1. Time Management and Importance of Communicating effectively
2. Transitioning from College to a Workplace
3. Basic Project Management Skills
Students of the final and pre-final years (2017-21 Batch S7 ECE and 2018-22 Batch S5 ECE) attended the talk.

The Dept. association organized an invited talk on “Technologies, Trend and Career Opportunities in Embedded System Domain” in collaboration with IEEE SB. The Resource Person was Mr. S Thomas, CEO and MD of Digital Core Technologies. The talk was for the students of S4, S6 and S8 ECE on Thursday 28 Feb 2019.

RESOURCE PERSON : Jojish Joseph, Scientist NPOL, Kochi

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) organized a talk by Mr. Jojish Joseph , Scientist NPOL, Kochi for faculty members and 8th Semester students on 10th February, 2017. He is also department advisory board member. The talk began with the opportunities for engineering students in this era and the key outlooks that one must have while pursuing a career in engineering. He emphasized that engineering is about value creation, having a spirit of innovation a continuous strive to find solutions to problems of inefficiency thus leading to happy outcomes for individuals, firms as well as society in general. He then introduced DRDO and NPOL, with a brief explanation about the nature and type of work and launched to his talk about applying signal processing to develop one particular system. The talk was coordinated by Ms.Anjaly S V(Assistant Professor, ECE).

IEEE SB One-Day Visit to Idukki Dam

A team of IEEE student members from MITS , accompanied by Dr. Arun Joy, Asst. Professor, ECE and Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Asst. Professor, ECE visited Idukki dam on 7 May 2022.

IEEE Student Chapter

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. IEEE student branch MITS was inaugurated on 12th February 2018. All the faculty members of the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) are professional members of IEEE. “Jumpstart" - School Student Outreach Program

“Jumpstart – School Student Outreach Program”, was organized from 04 to 08 April 2022 , at Catholicate Higher secondary school, Pathanamthitta. The program was for school students of 9th standard and 11th standard. 50 students attended the program.

The program was five days long. The first day included introduction to electronic boards, sensors and interfacing along with a hands- on project on development of a sensor based embedded system. Second day gave an insight into robotics and cyber physical systems along with a session on building a robot car and hands-on IoT. On the third day a hands-on session was arranged on drone and 3D printing. The fourth day was an introduction to Technology 5.0 with basic concepts of python. The fifth day was a walkthrough with machine learning and classification problems.

The entire five day program was coordinated by Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Asst. Professor, Department of ECE and Dr. Anand Hareendran, Associate Professor & HoD,  CSE Department.

A team of ECE faculties, Dr. Arunkant A Jose, Mr. Rishikesh P H, and Ms. Deepa Prabhu handled the first three days of the program. Mr. Gince Mon , Lab Staff of ECE had supported the program on these three days. ECE student volunteers-Gabriel Eldose, Elvis Joseph Shibu, Alan K Alias Aswin Venugopal, Keziya Helen Babu, Devika R B and Alen Sabu of S8 ECE (2018-22), and Sreevidya, Rufus Niikita, Akhil Babu and Malavika of S6 ECE(2019-23)- assisted the sessions on the first three days. The last two days were handled by CSE faculties and staff.

Industry 4.0: Current Research Trends and Challenges

A KTU sponsored 5 day FDP on ‘Industry 4.0: Current Research Trends and Challenges’ was held from 27th – 31st may 2019. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kumar Rajamani,Manager (Technical), Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Bangalore. He also handled a hands on session on Tensor flow. The other sessions were handled by academicians of reputed institutions like NITs and Amritha University. A session on Next generation wireless networks was handled by Dr. Neelakantan PC, Principal,MITS and a session on Deep learning was handled by Ms.Vidya T.V, Asst. Professor, ECE, MITS. The FDP was co-ordinated by Dr. Selvia Kuriakose and Ms. Deepa Prabhu, Asst Professor, MITS.

Relevant areas in RF and Wireless communication

In order to strengthen the ongoing programs of the ECE Department and to cater to the growing demands of bridging the gulf between academy and industry in the field of RF/Wireless communication, the department of ECE in partnership with Keysight Technolgies (formerly Agilent Technologies) has set up a state of the art advanced research laboratory. The lab was declared as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) by M/s Keysight Technologies on 14/02/18. To mark the occasion and to foster cooperation between academia, research organisations and industry, the department also conducted a five day workshop from 12/02/2018 to 16/02/2018 Relevant areas in RF and Wireless communication“. The sessions were handled by eminent personalities from industry & academia.

WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED

Introduction to IOT

As part of fund raising for Vyapti’19 a two day workshop on “Introduction to IOT” was conducted by the S8 ECE for the junior batches and students of other departments. The event was coordinated by the S8- ECE students, Mr. Anugrah Sundaram, Mr. Anandu A. and Ms. Megha Baby.

VLSI Design using CADENCE

The Dept of ECE organized a five days online hands-on workshop on ‘Analog & Digital VLSI Design using Cadence Tool Suite’ from 3rd to 7th August, 2020. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Shobha Gopalakrishnan, Ms. Binu Manohar and Dr. Krishnapriya S. It provided an exposure to the state-of-art VLSI design tool, Cadence. The participants were given a hands-on experience using the tool and also, the concepts of analog and digital circuit design methodologies. The workshop provided an insight into the hardware description language, Verilog as well.

Young Inventor

The ECE Department organized a summer course “Young Inventor” for the school students aged between 11 & 15 Years, from 14th May 2018 to 18th May 2018. This course was based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) approach.

CLINIC

Overview:

The Clinic was an activity for the S7 ECE Batch of students.The clinic was aimed at making the Department or Class rooms Smart. The students were led through basic prototyping of electronic hardware needed to detect motion and automatically switch on/off the light or fan accordingly.
