In House Concrete Mix Design workshop- Outlook

ICI student chapter of MITS organised a hands-on mix design workshop for CE students on April 2024

Total 21 students participated in the workshop

Resource Faculty – Dr Kannan C Bhanu supported by Devi Harikumar and Theertha Sundaram of S8 Civil.

The workshop offered great learning for civil engineering aspirants and confidence to go ahead with industry level competency in the mix design process.

Department of Civil Engineering organised a site visit to Water treatment plant for S7 CE students on 19/10/23. The visit was organized for students to get exposure to the Industrial aspects of the theory & practical course on Environmental Engineering.

Department of Civil Engineering organised a site visit (construction site of two-storey Auditorium Building at Pattimattom) for S5 CE students on last thursday. Site visit was planned in alignment with the course "Design of Concrete Structures".

Faculty Development Programme on “Advanced Soil Reclamation Techniques” from 4th April 2022 to 8th April 2022

Department of Civil Engineering organized a three day online Faculty Development program on “Advanced Soil Reclamation Techniques” from 4th April 2022 to 8th April 2022. The technical discussions and interactive sessions were handled by renowned personalities in the field of Geotechnical engineering and Environmental Engineering. The sessions were planned and executed to benefit the attendees with practical exposure of the engineering fundamentals delivered through theory courses. The experts interest in explaining the concepts based on practical problems helped the beneficiaries to relate problems in the field with the knowledge they gained through the four walls of lecture halls.

Technical Talk on 24/03/2022 by Dr. Arun K Nair, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engg., University of Arkansas, USA.

The event was organized by IGBC student chapter in association with ETERNIA and ICI for students to get exposure into the recent innovations and in engineering materials. The behavior, mechanical properties and uses of Bio inspired composites was the knowledge domain under discussion. The speaker for the session was Dr. Arun K Nair, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engg., University of Arkansas, USA.

Practical exposure for Final year students - 26/10/21

As part of enhancing the existing sporting facility in MITS campus, active civil engineering works are being executed under the consultancy cell. Students were given opportunity to experience and understand the ongoing activities and exposure to the industry practices of modern tools used in construction were provided. Power trowel, surface vibrator are few to name among those tools. The important check points and factors influencing the design and construction of steel structures were imparted to students by the visit to the new indoor badminton facility that is under construction in the Boys hostel premises. The construction of retaining wall, its need and important aspects to be considered for planning, designing and execution of the structure was explained to the students in detail on the visit. 

An Expert talk on 16th June 2021 – “MARADU DEMOLITION SAGA- KNOW IT ALL”

The event was organized by IGBC student chapter in association with ETERNIA and ICI for students to understand the engineering facts regarding the violation of CRZ norms and rules which lead to the demolition of residential buildings along the Kerala coastline. The speaker for the session was Dr Anil Joseph, Managing Director, Geo Structurals Pvt. Ltd.

Winners in the DESIGNO - Envisioning Spaces

ICI Trivandrum Chapter, organized a competition for Civil engineering students of Engineering colleges named DISEGNO “Envisioning Spaces”. Students from all the even semesters combinedly formed a team and our students emerged as a winning team among the competitors.

Department of Civil Engineering organized a three day online short term training program on “Recent Advancements in Structures and Materials” from 15th to 17th December 2020. The technical discussions and interactive sessions were handled by renowned personalities in the field of structural engineering and construction industry. Additional sessions on software tools being used in the research industry for analysis of complicated structural engineering problems proved to be the highlight of the event.

Kerala Pollution Control Board approved Environmental Engineering laboratory of Civil Engineering department, MITS as Institutional Purpose category laboratory for water testing.

Rebuild Kerala Project under LSGD, Govt. of Kerala

Department of Civil Engineering, MITS got selected by LSGD, Govt. of Kerala as a 2nd tier quality control Mechanism for Rebuild Kerala Initiative. Second tier institutes is expected to take part in the Rebuild Kerala initiative by being a part in periodic inspections, collection and testing of samples and related report preparations.

Des Scholar, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Online platform google meet was used for ensuring proper interaction between the expert and participants. The informative and innovation packed session was intended for second year students.

Technical Talk on "Climate change and its impact on Water Resources".

Department of Civil Engineering is organizing a technical talk on “Climate change and its impact on water resources”. The session will be held by Dr. Eldho T.I. (Head of Civil Engineering Department, IIT Bombay). The session is scheduled for 08.10.2020 @ 4.00 p.m. through online platform Google Meet.

Eternia –  Civil engineering association in association with ICI & IGBC organized a technical talk on “Integrating Safety In Construction Life Cycle”. The eminent speaker from TATA Consulting Engineers, Mr. Joshy John interacted with students of Civil Engineering department in MITS. A very effective exercise in exposing students to the industry practices and application of knowledge they gain through Civil engineering.

Online Symposium on ” Bridging Industry – Institute”

An Industry Institute cell initiative of Department of Civil engineering for bridging the gap between industry and institute was held from 30/07/20. The resource persons were from industry with which MITS, CED has signed memorandum of understanding.

Online STTP on “Safety Measures in Transportation Systems” – 27, 28, 29 May 2020

A 3 day online Short term training program on “Safety Measures in Transportation Systems” was organized by department of Civil Engineering from 27th to 29th of May 2020. Involvement of eminent speakers from Academia, Industry and research institutes added color and flavor to the event. A nation wide active participation of more than 100 participants including faculty members from different engineering colleges in India, practicing engineers, post graduate and under-graduate students echoes the usefulness of the topics discussed.

A Technical discussion on - Balanced Cantilever construction of Kochi Metro

ETERNIA, in association with ICI student chapter of MITS and Builders Association of India, organized a technical talk for students on “Balanced Cantilever construction of Kochi Metro” delivered by Shri G Kesava Chandra , Chief Engineer, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on 17th February, 2020. The session entailed informative ideas on the construction of Kochi Metro.

Talk on “Application of Artificial Intelligence in the field of civil Engineering”

Eternia, Civil Engineering Association of MITS organized a talk  for  s4,s6 and s8 students on “Application of Artificial Intelligence in the field of civil Engineering” delivered by Mr Mahalingam P R, Computer Science department , MITS  on 27th January 2020.The talk focused on providing a brief introduction to machine learning which is a subset of of Artificial Intelligence that analyses statistical models to perform a task without explicit instructions and relying on pattern and interference.

Technical Session on Non destructive Testing

Eternia, Civil Engineering Association, of MITS organized  an introductive session for s4,s6 and s8 students regarding the NDT tests and its job opportunities delivered by trainees from Techshore Engineering Serives, Pvt Ltd on 20th January 2020 . Techshore Inspection Services is a leading engineering service provider offering a wide range of innovative services, engineering solutions, and professional training in the field of Oil and Gas, Power and other major industries in the disciplines of Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation and NDT(Concrete NDT/Mechanical). This session focused on the various NDT tests like Rebound Hammer and Ultrasonic testing, and the courses offered by them for letting the engineers to have an hands on experience. Techshore inspired the students to  design and create products, services and systems which can transform the industry and human lives.

Survey Camp as part of "Rebuild Kerala Initiative"

Survey Camp as part of “Rebuild Kerala Initiative”

Third year students of Civil engineering department conducted road survey for “Rebuild Kerala Initiative” to reconstruct Panchayath and municipal roads damaged during the flood 2018 & 2019 . The surveying camp was held from 7th January 2019 onwards for 6 days in various Panchayaths. A total stretch of more than 8 kms were surveyed and the reports were submitted to LSGD.

Design Studio for Third year Civil Engineering Students

A one week hands-on training program for pre final year students on preparation of spreadsheet templates for design and detailing of various RCC structural components was organized by Department of Civil Engineering in second week of January 2020.

In – House Faculty Development Program on "MULTIVARIATE DATA ANALYSIS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING"

The Department of Civil Engineering has been conducted an in – house Faculty Development program on ‘Multivariate Data Analysis in Civil Engineering’ on 10th January 2020.

The program mainly aims to give the importance of data analysis and the applications of different tools and software used for data analysis in the field of Civil Engineering. The faculty development program is organized by aiming MITS Civil Engineering faculty to give an idea about the mathematical background of regression analysis, importance of regression analysis and the applications of different tools and software used for data analysis in the field of Civil Engineering.

The program commenced at 09:00am. Dr. Babu Kurian, Dean and Head of the department of Civil Engineering welcomed the gathering. DrP. C. Neelakantan, Principal, MITS inaugurated the program.

Hands on Concrete Mix Design Workshop

On 7th November 2019, a hands on workshop on Concrete Mix Design was conducted for final year civil students of MITS by the association of Qcrete India (P) Ltd, one of the largest producers of ready mix concrete in state. The session was handled by Er. Shelly S Fernandez, Managing Director, Qcrete Ready Mix India (P) Ltd. The session was included with both mix design calculation with and without admixtures and trials in the laboratory based on the designed mix by students. From industry point of view, the session was very much benefited for the students to realize the exact practice happening in the field of concrete technology.

Visit at Retaining wall & Box culvert construction site.

Third year students from Department of Civil Engineering visited a Civil construction site on 24th September 2019 as part of gaining exposure to industry practices. The site visited by student is at Puthencruz Panchayath. The ongoing project visited was of construction of a Retaining wall and Box culvert undertaken by LSGD Puthencruz Panchayath. The project stage at the time of visit was laying of reinforcement bars and intial preparations for concreting.

The students were addressed by the Assistant Executive Engineer and a detailed explanation on the ongoing project activity and industry practices was delivered by the Assistant Engineer, LSGD Puthencruz Panchayath.

Visit To Sree Poornathrayeesha Vridha Sadanam Charitable Trust

NSS unit of Fifth semester students of Civil Engineering Department has organized a visit to Sree Poornathrayeesha Vridha Sadanam – old age home at Ernakulam on 15th October 2019 between 10.30 am and 12.30 pm. The session was headed by Mr. Anilkumar, Orphanage councilor, Social justice department and he made a talk on importance of palliative care.

Technical talk  on “How to become an efficient Civil Engineer”

Civil Engineering Association, ETERNIA organized a technical talk  on “How to become an efficient Civil Engineer” on 10th October 2019. The technical session was handled by L. Srikumar Pai, Head of Training, NIT Calicut Alumni Association, Kochi. The talk enriched the students with knowledge on various opportunities and branches of Civil Engineering. The session included a glimpse over various technical, software and interpersonal skills necessary for a Civil Engineer. With the quotations of well-known Civil Engineers, the students were inspired of the better career ahead.

ICI-Student Chapter of MITS In association with Civil Engineering Association – ETERNIA organized a technical talk on “Economical and Durable Concrete using Blended Cements” by Er.Sebin Jose, Asst. General Manager, Customer service, Zuari Cement Ltdon 2nd September 2019. The session included a video presentation about ICI student chapter of MITS. The talk enlightened the students with the advancements in the production and application of cement in construction.

Department of Civil Engineering, MITS organized the Installation ceremony of Office Bearers of Civil Engineering Association – ETERNIA for the academic year 2019-20 and release of departmental newsletter ETERNIA’19 on 2nd September 2019. The event was honoured by the presence of Er.Sebin Jose, Asst. General Manager, Customer service, Zuari Cement Ltd who delivered a technical talk on Economical and Durable Concrete using Blended Cements.

Expert Talk on Engineering Our Future

A talk on Engineering our future was given by Mr. Muralee Thummarukudy, Chief disaster Risk Reduction, UN Environment programme on 16 August 2019. The talk made students aware about new job opportunities in the field of civil engineering.  There was a discussion based on the recent landslides and flood that was happened in Kerala.

FDP-“ Advanced Training Programme on GIS and Remote Sensing”

A 6-day KTU sponsored faculty development programme on “ADVANCED TRAINING PROGRAMME ON REMOTE SENSING AND GIS” was held at the Department of Civil Engineering of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science, in collaboration with Dr. R. Satheesh Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS, School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam from 24th June to 29th June, 2019. Objective of this faculty development programme was to acquire hands-on experience in the application of Remote sensing and GIS techniques. The FDP was attended by around 30 participants including faculty members from different colleges and industry persons in Civil Engineering Division. Participants were enlightened with the most widely used advance technologies in this domain. This in turn will help in research activity and placement opportunity.

International Conference (Springer) – ARICE 2019

Civil Engineering Department of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science has organized an international conference onAdvanced  Research  and Innovations in Civil Engineering, ARICE 2019. The conferencewas organized with a motivation to provide a platform for the pioneer academicians, researchers, practitioners and students to share their innovative research and review recent achievements in the advancement of knowledge in the field of Civil Engineering. We  received  184  papers  which  were  reviewed  by  eminent  reviewers.  Among  them,  81 papers   were   accepted.   In   addition   to   the   contributed   papers,   two   invited   keynote presentations were given by Dr. DevdasMenon, Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, who spoke about the innovations in civil engineering construction, and by Dr. RaoMartand Singh, Asst. Professor, University of Surrey, UK, who spoke about the geothermal energy pile foundations for heating & cooling buildings.

Technical Talk on E-Waste Management

Eternia, in association with Eco-club has organized an expert talk on E-waste management for S4CE students on 10th April 2019. The resource person was Mr. Jaimon Jacob, Asst. Professor, ModelEngg. College Thrikkakara.

Expert Talk on "Awareness on Structural Design Softwares"

On 8th April 2019, Eternia has organized an awareness talk on Structural Design Software for S8CE students. The session was headed by Mr.Sijo Joseph from CAD CAMPUS. It helps the students to have an overview into the various structural design software used in industries.

Construction 4.0 - Civil Engineering Perspective

On 4th April 2019 ICI student chapter of MITS organized a technical summit on the topic “Construction 4.0- Civil Engineering Perspective”. Our esteemed panelists were, Er. S Sathiapalan (Retd. Executive Engineer, Kerala PWD/NH Division and leading structural consultant in Kerala. Currently employed with “Safe Matrix Architectural and Engineering Consultants India Pvt. Ltd”),  Er. Reji Zachariah (Chief Executive Officer, S&R Consultants, Kochi) and Prof.Nidhi M B (Professor, Mar Baselious College of Engineering and Technology, Trivandrum, National Executive council member of ISTE and Joint Secretary of IIIE – Indian Institution of Industrial Engineers, Kerala Chapter)

 

Association Activity Inauguration 2018-2019

The Department of Civil Engineering of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science celebrated the inaugural function of Civil Engineering Association (ETERNIA) on 8th August 2018 and it was a grand success. All the Students, Staff members, Association members and dignitaries were all present in the function. The day began with the beautiful quote for welcoming the gathering. The function was inaugurated by Ms.Shikha Surendran, Civil Service Topper. Ms.Mary Lissy P N, Head of Civil Engineering Department delivered the welcome address and Principal Dr. S. Ramkumar delivered the presidential address. The newly elected office bearers for ETERNIA 2018-2019 were also introduced in the function. The chief guest was honoured with a memento. Interactive session with the Chief guest Ms.Shikha Surendran was the highlight of the function. President of ETERNIA Bony Babu delivered the vote of thanks and the function was concluded by the National anthem.

Association Activity Inauguration 2017-2018

Department of Civil Engineering, MITS organized the Association activity inauguration and release of departmental newsletter ETERNIA’17 (Vol 4) on 23rd August 2017. Ms. Mary Lissy P.N (HoD, CE) delivered the welcome address. Dr. Ramkumar S (Principal, MITS) presided over the function. The event was honoured by the presence of Dr. Anil Joseph (Managing Director, Geostructurals Pvt. Ltd.) who shared the profound and valuable experience he has in the field. His talk on ‘New innovations in Civil Engineering’ gave students and staffs an exposure to various ground improvement techniques. He also gave an insight into the potentiality of high strength concrete and prefab construction.

Inauguration of the activities of ETERNIA for the year 2016-17 was held with great joy on 5th August 2016. Shri Shelly S Fernandez, Founder chairman of Indian Concrete Institute, Kochi Chapter, lighted the lamp, thereby setting off an auspicious start to the activities of ETERNIA for the year 2016-2017. This was followed by an enlightening talk by him on upcoming opportunities of civil engineers in the industry and making use of these opportunities in an ethical way.

Dr. Anitha G Pillai (Chairperson, Indian Concrete Institute, Kochi Chapter), Prof K.T Subramanian, Principal, MITS and Dr. A.C Mathai, Academic Advisor, MITS also spoke on the occasion. Civil Engineering Association was Inaugurated by Shri. Elias George IAS, MD, KMRL on 08-07-2014.

Shri K Lava, Managing Director of Skyline Foundations and Structures Pvt Ltd, lighted the lamp, thereby setting off an auspicious start to the activities of ETERNIA in the running year. This was followed by an enlightening talk by him on splendid future possibilities and upcoming revolutions in the field of construction. The day also witnessed the release of the newsletter of ETERNIA – an overview of our efforts and accomplishments in the last academic year. Shri K Lava received the first copy of the newsletter from Dr. A C Mathai, academic advisor of MITS.

Association Activity Inauguration 2013-2014

The Civil Engineering Association of Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science (MITS) was inaugurated by Shri. Elias George IAS, MD, KMRL on 8-7-2014, Tuesday. The name of the association ‘ETERNIA’ and logo was released on the occasion. During his inaugural address, Mr. Elias George elaborated on the challenges and various aspects of Metro Project. He invoked the Civil Engineering students of MITS that the need of the hour is not just technical knowledge and academics but they must acquire people skills for managing, legal, financial and management aspects of every endeavor. He urged the students to stick to their profession, as there is an unprecedented demand for young and vibrant civil engineers in India for the fast developing infrastructure segment.

WORKSHOP ON "GEOHAZARDS- MITIGATION & PREVENTION"

ETERNIA, the Civil Engineering Association of MITS in association with Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) organised a Three Day Workshop on ‘Geohazards – Mitigation & Prevention’ from 30th July -1st August 2018. The course is intended to enrich and update the knowledge of faculty in the area of geohazards and their mitigation and prevention strategies.31 participants from various colleges participated.

SHORT TERM TRAINING PROGRAMME ON 'DESIGN AND DETAILING OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS'

he Department of Civil Engineering in association with ICI student chapter of MITS organized a five day Short Term Training Programme (STTP) on ‘Design and Detailing of Structural Elements’ from 8th January 2018 to 12 th January 2018. The course was intended to enrich and update the knowledge of faculty in the area of design and detailing of structural elements by giving an insight into the revised IS codal design provisions. 36 participants from various colleges participated. Resource persons who graced the auspicious event were from the various eminent educational institutions, NIT’s, IIT’s and industrial firms of the country. Dr. N Ganesan, Professor NIT Calicut, inaugurated the program on 8th January 2018. A SMART, EDUCATIONAL LOOK ON SURVEY CAMP USING TOTAL STATION

A three day hands-on workshop on “Survey Camp Using Total Station” was organised from 26 – 28 th July, 2017 for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the Department of Civil Engineering. The sessions were handled by Mr. Bibin Jacob, Surveyor, SOMA Enterprises,Kochi. The workshop instigated by a lecture on surveying, highlighted the basic to advanced level of site surveying procedures and various operations using Total Station. The practical session of the workshop consummated with control point establishment, calculations and error adjustments, and data management. The workshop offered a transcendent exposure and experience to the staff of Civil Department. The
workshop was coordinated by Ms. Midhun Elizabeth Varghese (Asst. Professor, CE) and Ms. Vilma Baby (Asst. Professor, CE).

NATIONAL CONFERENCE – ARICE 2016

Civil Engineering Department of MITS hosted its first National Conference on Advanced Research and Innovations in Civil Engineering (ARICE 2016) on 8th September 2016. While Dr. J Letha, Vice Chancellor, CUSAT was the chief guest for the occasion, Dr. P K Aravindan, Former Professor at IIT Madras, and a leading structural consultant gave the keynote address initiating the conference that was attended by academicians and engineering students from all around. The conference proceedings gave an insight into ongoing developments in the field of civil engineering and the associated recent research works that are in progress. Best B. Tech Project Award in Ultra Tech – ICI Awards 2018

The Best B.Tech Project Award in Ultra Tech-ICI awards 2018 is received by the students of 2018 pass out. The student team members are Basil Johny, Jayitha V Mohan, Preshma P S and Jaseel M A under the guide ship of Ms. Anusree A, Assistant Professor, Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science.

Emerging ICI-Student Chapter Award (National Level)

ICI (Indian Concrete Institute) Student Chapter of the Department of Civil Engineering, MITS was elected as the “Emerging Student Chapter” all over India. The title marked an exemplary recognition at the National level wherein more than 100 ICI Chapters were recommended. It was really a proud moment for the Civil Engineering Department to win the title in its beginning stage itself. Ms. Mary Lissy P N (HoD, CE) received the award from Dr.M R Kalgal (President, ICI) in the 34th Annual General Body Meeting of ICI held at Nagpur on 8th October 2017.

ICI Outstanding Student Chapter Award (State Level)

Muthoot Institute of Technology and Science was conferred with an award for being the OUTSTANDING ICI STUDENTS CHAPTER. The awards felicitation was held at KOCHI MARRIOT HOTEL, COCHIN on 30th October 2017.

ICI Activity Inauguration 2016-2017

Indian Concrete Institute Student Chapter at the Department of Civil Engineering, MITS in the year 2016. Indian Concrete Institute (ICI) is the premier professional body for concrete technology with above 10,000 members with 31 centres spread across India. It has on its fold the captains of Construction Industry, Building material manufacturers, Leading Consultants & Civil Engineers, Contractors, Academicians and Educational Institutions. ICI was founded in 1982 with it’s headquarter at Chennai. The objectives of ICI are to promote the growth of concrete construction and its subspecializations, to disseminate knowledge and to train personnel, to collaborate with national and International agencies in creating a better understanding of concrete construction technology, to identify R&D issues, encourage outstanding achievements in concrete construction technology through its institutional awards etc. ICI organizes periodical seminars, conferences, workshops and exhibitions on the subject and arranges lecture series on selected topics of relevance to concrete construction.

INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL

IGBC STUDENT CHAPTER

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001. The vision of the council is, “To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025”.The council offers a wide array of services which include developing new green building rating programmes, certification services and green building training programmes. The council also organizes Green Building Congress, its annual flagship event on green buildings.

INAUGURATION OF STUDENT CHAPTER

The IGBC student chapter was inaugurated by Ms. Soumini Jain, Mayor, Kochi Corporation on 5th June 2018 at Ernakulam. Ar. B. R Ajit, President, IGBC Kochi Chapter, Mr. K Lava & Mr. P Mathew Joseph, Co-Chairmen, IGBC Kochi chapter & Mr. J Paul Raj, President, CREDAI also attended the inaugural ceremony.

IGBC INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS, HYDERABAD

16th edition of IGBC’s flagship event ‘Green Building Congress 2018’ was held at HICC, Hyderabad, Telanganabetween 31st October – 3rd November 2018. Green Building Congress 2018 featured 3 days of multiple conferences, and parallel 3 day – Exhibition showcasing the latest Green Building Technologies, Products & Services. Six students of S8 CE and one faculty member from MITS were among the 3,000 delegates who attended the congress. The details are listed below:

INTER DEPARTMENT DEBATE COMPETITION

An inter-department debate competition was organized by IGBC student chapter in MITS. The competition was conducted in two phases: Preliminary & Main. Seven teams registered for the event and two best teams were selected for the main round. Main round was chaired by Dr. Neelakantan P.C, Associate Director (Academics and Research), Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering & Technology on 15th September 2018. The team comprising Ms. Megha Maria Biju & Ms. Meghna Rose Binil from S3 EEE bagged the First Prize. The winning team was given a cash prize worth Rs. 2000 and a direct entry to the All Kerala Maria Philip Debate Competition organized by XIME, Kochi.

TECHNICAL TALK ON “GREEN BUILDINGS”

A technical talk on “Green Buildings” was delivered by Er. Himanshu Dutta Prajapati on 23rd November, 2018. Students from S1, S3 and S6 semester attended the talk.
